Committee Member Highlight

Leslie Holmes is the new leader of the Membership Committee here at OLLI at Pitt.  She is an active member in OLLI classes as a student and has gotten very involved with the program! We recently sat down and asked Leslie a few questions to learn a little more about her.

When did you join OLLI?

I joined OLLI in January of 2016, after completing a rewarding thirty-eight year career teaching first graders in the Keystone Oaks School District.  I was very excited to make the jump to the other end of the educational spectrum!

How did you find out about OLLI?

I first heard about OLLI from my daughter who graduated from Pitt's School of Pharmacy.  I think she was concerned about my transition to retirement and wanted to make me aware of my options.   She needn't have worried.  I was ready!

What is one of your favorite memories of your time here?

I have had so many great experiences, that it's hard to select just one.   Some include...

...The friendly people I met at the coffee get-together I attended before my first class.  They immediately made me feel comfortable and excited to begin the program.

...Walking into the same classrooms now as an OLLI student that I entered as a graduate student, and reflecting on the person I was then and am now.

...The people I've met and the friends I've made that have made my life so much richer.

...The Holiday Luncheon and Concert

...Laughing until my face hurt while learning about law enforcement from J.J. Hensley, an ex-Secret Service man with a great sense of humor.

...Hearing about an opportunity in Rabbi Symon's "Love Thy Neighbor" class to help an immigrant family adapt to their new life, and turning the opportunity into a most rewarding experience.

What projects are you most looking forward to with the committee?

I'm looking forward to making more people aware of the joys of OLLI while working to ensure continued satisfaction of its current members.

If you could offer advice to a relatively new OLLI member, what would it be?

I would suggest that they go into each class with an open mind and consider/respect opposing viewpoints.  I would also tell them to take advantage of all OLLI has to offer in addition to the classes, including Cheap Seats, lectures, social events, and trips.

What would you like to see in the future of OLLI?

I would love to see an increase in volunteerism.  Help where help is needed!

Anything else you would like to share?

Yes!  I'd like to share my gratitude to Pat, Jen, and now Sharon for the high standard they have set for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
