Committee Member Highlight

Dona Albert is a member of the Membership Committee here at OLLI at Pitt.  She is an active member in OLLI classes as a student and instructor and has gotten very involved with the program! We recently sat down and asked Dona a few questions to learn a little more about her.

When did you join OLLI?

January 2010, when I first got to Pittsburgh

How did you find out about OLLI?

My husband and I had been retired for about 12 years in Alabama, but we were looking for "a place to grow old!"  I started doing research and it was about that time that Pittsburgh appeared on a list of places to retire; and along with all the culture activities, they mentioned educational opportunities through Osher.  I started my first OLLI class four days after moving to Pittsburgh!

What is one of your favorite memories of your time here?

I've enjoyed getting to meet people and the majority of my classes, but what I've enjoyed most is getting to teach!  I've taught four vegetarian cooking classes (and hope to do another this summer), and I just love it.  It's a bit of work to cook for 20 people, but I've had so much fun that it's all worth it.

What project(s) are you most looking forward to with the committees?

Coming up with ways to engage members outside of the classrooms.  The educational part of Osher is great, but I think there are lots of folks who would enjoy the opportunity to socialize with like-minded people.

If you could offer advice to a relatively new OLLI member, what would it be?

Sign up for classes in subjects you aren't sure you like!  I've confirmed that I really don't get physics, but discovered that I'm a political science junkie.  That actually came as a surprise to me; so my advice is to be adventurous, and try something new.

What would you like to see in the future of OLLI?

More chances to socialize.

Anything else you would like to share?

We're not just students, but members of an organization.  All the committees (curriculum, membership, etc.) need your input to steer the program in the direction you'd like to see.  Be sure to complete evaluations at the end of courses so you can share your thoughts on classes or instructors you enjoy, classes you'd like to see offered, trips you'd like to take, etc.
