Meet Our Instructor

Cathy Sendek-Sapp has been an instructor with OLLI at Pitt for many years and has taught over 50 courses for our students!  She teaches a variety of French language courses.  Recently, we sat down with Cathy to chat.

When did you first start teaching for OLLI?

I've been on board since the very first session of OLLI at Pitt. Judi Bobenage invited me to present a 5-week French for Beginner's course. I think there were around 15-18 participants enrolled in the class.

What book is on your nightstand?  What will be the next book that you read?

I truly love to read! I have a tendency to gravitate to non-fiction, choosing to immerse myself in short doses across multiple titles rather than taking on one long yawn. There are usually 3 or 4 different books on my nightstand at any given time, with maybe one novel worked in. I am currently reading: The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz, Learn Spanish in 30 Days, a charming set of French short stories: Le Petit Nicolas et les copains, a book about conscious breath-work for health, and the 1st book of a sci-fi series recommended by my son. Next to rotate in will be Zen and the Art of Happiness by Chris Prentis.

Where is your dream destination and why?

French Polynesia-- Seascapes, mountains, tropical ambiance and speaking French! These elements sound like an amazing combination to me!

If you could offer advice to a relatively new OLLI instructor, what would it be?

Teaching for OLLI at Pitt is an amazing opportunity to present your expertise to an appreciative audience. Non-credit courses hold different parameters than clearly defined "for credit" curriculum. Allow your students to help you grow into a flexible teaching style.

What is your favorite time of year?

I enjoy with equal measure the exuberance of Spring's awakening - riotous birdsong, leaves & flowers unfurling, and the way Autumn's vibrant colors settle into a hush before Winter begins.

Anything else you would like to share?

Kudos to all the wonderfully brave souls who are willing to step out of their articulate comfort zones and plunge into "baby babble" in their effort to learn another language!  I feel honored to be a part of a program that offers so much opportunity for people to grow intellectually and stay socially active.
