Notes from the Oct 3rd Update: OMET Has an Extra Week!

Complete OMET Evaluations by October 10th

Don't forget to compete the OMET (Office of Measurement and Evaluation of Teaching) evaluations that were emailed on September 19th.

Your OMET evaluation came from this address:
TeachingSurvey@omet.pitt.edu

OMET Evaluations will run until Monday, October 10, 2022. This is a week longer than usual, as we've finally corrected the issue affecting Gmail users and wanted to give those members some extra time to get reaquanted with the eval form.

A note about filling out the OMET course evaluations:

Sometimes it's okay to be critical, and we value all data points, even if you dropped the course. We get many glowing evaluations about our instructors, which is great; but sometimes there are things that we and the instructor would like to know even if it’s not glowing, such as:
instructor did not control discussions, instructor didn’t have a good grasp of equipment, course was not described properly in the catalog, or course was too broad. It helps us to know so that OLLI and your instructors can put together the best courses possible.

By the way, if an instructor can’t be heard, isn’t familiar with equipment or allows the class to go off track, email or call the office. These are easy fixes that we can help the instructor with while the course is going on.

Dropping an OLLI Course

We get it! Schedules can become very busy, very quickly; and sometimes you cannot commit to attending an Osher course as you had originally planned. If you realize that you are unable to participate in courses for which you had registered, please take a few minutes to officially drop them from your schedule.

How to Drop

We prefer that you email us at osher@pitt.edu with your drop requests. You may also call us at 412-624-7308. You cannot drop a course online through the OLLI registration site.

Why It Is Important

There are many reasons why it is important to officially drop a class that you are not attending:

- We need to maintain accurate numbers for attendance and enrollment. This is information that we use to determine future OLLI courses, class sizes, and class location.
- An up-to-date class roster makes it easier for us to send out notice in case of class cancellations, late starts, or other unexpected events.
- Enrollment numbers may impact how your instructors will structure their classes and how much time they leave for questions and discussion.
- Some courses have waitlists, and we cannot move people from the waitlist to the course roster until a member drops the course.

Give the Gift of Knowledge

Thinking about holiday gifts for family and friends? End of the year retirees? People who might have just moved into town? Osher gift certificates are available year round.

Gift certificates are for term and annual memberships at regular pricing for each. They are valid for use within one year of purchase.

To purchase a gift certificate, call OLLI at Pitt at 412-624-7308.

Invite Your Friends to Join

As the days get shorter and people are looking for new things to do, tell them about OLLI at Pitt. Suggest session 2 which begins October 17th.

Tuesday, October 18, 2022
Noon to 1 p.m. EDT

Featuring:

Dr. Graham F. Hatfull

About This Event:

Pitt Health Academy events provide a unique platform to showcase groundbreaking research and advancements in the health sciences. This fall, join Drs. Pilewski and Hatfull as they discuss how antibiotics revolutionized medicine and the limits of the life-saving medications. You'll learn how University biologists, researchers and physicians are using an experimental technique involving bacteria-killing viruses, called bacteriophages, to successfully treat patients with deadly infections that are unresponsive to antibiotics. This experimental research-turned-to-practice has the capability to impact thousands of patients each year.

During the week leading up to this virtual event, registrants will also have exclusive access to view "Salt in My Soul," a new documentary featuring Dr. Pilewski and UPMC providers treating a young woman suffering from cystic fibrosis, free of charge. More about this event.

Rooms of Inspiration: A Call for Visual Artists, Poets and Writers

To mark International Artists Day (Oct. 25), the Nationality Rooms & Intercultural Exchange Program, in partnership with the Center for Creativity, invites Pitt students, staff, and faculty to use the Nationality and Heritage Rooms as springboards for creative expression, to see in them the positive energy and product of a universal urge to create.

Whether you are a painter, draftsperson, weaver, poet, ambient sound artist, or something altogether different, we are interested in how the Nationality Rooms inspire you.

For details on how to submit work for virtual and/or physical display, and on special creative research tours of the Nationality and Heritage Rooms, check out the website.
